More and more public figures, celebrities, and the people around us are admitting that they struggle with mental illness or seek psychological help. Fortunately, psychotherapy is no longer functioning in the public consciousness as a “figment” or a reason to be ashamed. Although there is a growing awareness of taking care of one’s mental hygiene and state of mind, there are still many people who do not fully know what psychotherapy is, so today we tell you what it is all about.

Coping with illnesses

Mental illnesses, especially in this era of pandemics, are a scourge. Very many people struggle with depression, anxiety disorders, social phobia or post-traumatic stress disorder. These conditions, if they are not very severe and do not require drug treatment, can be cured just with psychotherapy. It is a process in which, with the help of a mental health professional, you try to look for the cause of the problem and resolve it in a healthy way. Very many disorders or unhealthy behaviors are defense mechanisms of the psyche to stressful situations, difficult emotions or new experiences. When you take these mechanisms apart under the guidance of a professional, you often find that they can be easily prevented or replaced with healthy habits. The place where you can seek help if you feel that something wrong is happening to your mind is, for example, psychological counseling Warsaw

Addiction therapy

Virtually all addictions have their roots in the psyche. Many people struggling with addictions had difficult childhoods, absent or overprotective parents, or went through trauma. All of these factors can cause a person to feel drawn to stimulants. These, in turn, disrupt the production of serotonin, one of the “happy hormones,” thus making the brain dependent on the shots of this hormone that they themselves provide. In addition to organizations such as AA and NA, DDA and such social initiatives, there are also therapy centers, such as the MONAR association and private addiction treatment centers. The latter usually assume closed or semi-closed therapy, which in extreme cases is the only effective option

Getting to know yourself

Psychotherapy is also a way to get to know yourself better. Even if you don’t have troubling symptoms or disorders, it’s worth going to see a psychotherapist for self-care. Being able to talk to someone who will look at you with a more professional eye and help you make difficult decisions, for example, is a very valuable privilege

Don’t be ashamed to ask for help

Remember that a psychologist is a doctor like any other, and mental disorders are simply illnesses that are treated. You’re not ashamed of the fact that you have the flu or your cholesterol is too high. If you break your leg, you go to the doctor, not wait for it to go away on its own. So why are so many people ashamed to start psychotherapy and assume that depressive states should wait until they get better? Do not ignore alarming symptoms, protracted periods of depression, lack of motivation, and a frequent feeling of helplessness. Make an appointment with a psychotherapist to make sure everything is really okay.

Awareness of mental illness and psychotherapy is growing, but many people still don’t take the symptoms of serious illness seriously, explaining it by laziness, fatigue, or “that” character. It’s time to reject the idea that chocolate or jogging cures depression and go for a check-up with a psychologist
