How does music therapy work?

Where does the music therapy start? The first step is for the patient to see a doctor. During the interview, the patient’s medical conditions are diagnosed and a therapy is recommended – one of which may be treatment through music. Professional music therapy is conducted in sessions. During these sessions the therapist observes how the patient’s reactions change under the influence of the sounds he listens to. This may apply to his or her psychological sphere, but also, for example, to the psychomotor sphere.

Music therapy at home

The beneficial effect of music is so valuable that its application does not require cooperation with a therapist. The right choice of calm music that matches our interests will allow us to get in a good mood at home.

Can music therapy be inadvisable?

Such situations occur, but are very rare. It mainly concerns musicogenic epilepsy. In other cases, there are no contraindications to using the soothing effects of music.

What types of music are used in music therapy?

Loud and boisterous music, such as rock music, is usually not recommended. Sometimes, however, someone is a fan of this genre – then its use is not only allowed, but even advisable. The choice of music is always an individual matter – it is difficult to determine why some music works for a given patient, while others do not. There are also different types of music therapy based on the type of music used: primarily calming and activating.

Classical music

Classical music is always a good and universal way to conduct music therapy. Ravel’s Bolero in particular is often used in this way. A repetitive theme that gets louder and louder is usually a very good choice. Another popular choice is to bet on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s ”Eine Kleine Nachtmusik”. Ludwig van Beethoven’s First Symphony and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake are also recommended. On the other hand, relaxation music is not necessarily a good choice. Its role in reducing stress is questioned, and it can be too stimulating.
