Feng shui – what is it?

Feng shui is based on the idea that we are surrounded by different types of energy, or “qi”. They flow and affect everything in a given space. Using certain rules, you can make the most of them. Check out what you should pay special attention to!

Luopan, bagua and qi

Feng shui is an ancient art and science that originated over 3000 years ago in China. It shows how to balance the energy of a given space to guarantee the health and happiness of the household members. It provides balance, comfort and harmony in your environment. The compass (luopan) and bagua play an important role here. Using the compass, you can get accurate information about the building. The bagua, or energy map, is an octagonal grid containing the symbols of the I Ching – the ancient oracle on which feng shui is based. It represents eight areas of life: wealth, fame, love, family, children, knowledge, friends and personal development. If any of these areas need improvement, apply the appropriate principles to a specific space in your home

The key is qi, or the energy that connects all living beings. By implementing certain design principles, you ensure the free flow of energy through your home, improving your overall quality of life. There are many rules you must follow. Remember to never place your bed under a window.

Play with the elements

Feng shui principles also focus on five elements: earth, metal, water, wood and fire. Although each of them can be taken literally (e.g. wooden furniture in the living room), they correspond to certain emotions, shapes and colors. When decorating your interior, pay attention to all the elements.

Earth represents stability and security, wood symbolizes new life, development and creativity. Fire is associated with action, passion and fame. Water is associated with abundance, prosperity, movement, purification and the flow of emotions, while metal positively influences concentration, health, material status and love.

Do you want to decorate your home according to feng shui principles? Then remember to evenly place elements representing individual elements in all rooms. By doing so you will release positive energy and provide yourself with a sense of balance

You can introduce wood through plants, stones, marble, crystals or clay objects. Wondering how to incorporate the element of fire into your interior design? Decide on candles and soft lighting. Water can be represented by an aquarium, a fountain or even pictures of the sea, lake or ocean. As for the metal element, look out for metallic accessories such as bowls, stylish ornaments, or a new toaster.

Yin and yang

The philosophy of yin and yang also plays an important role. This is the concept of duality, showing that opposing forces are related. Yin is a passive, soft energy, while yang is associated with aggression and courage. When arranging your interior, make sure that the above mentioned energies remain in balance. Yin energy should dominate in calm, relaxing spaces such as bedroom and bathroom. Whereas yang plays a key role in the kitchen and home office.

Play with colors

Colors also express the five elements. They ensure the proper flow of qi energy in any space. Use colorful curtains, pillows, throws, rugs and decorations. If you don’t know where to start, follow a few guidelines. Yellow (earth) can help with digestion. It ties in with gold, so be sure to incorporate gold accents in your kitchen and dining room. Living rooms in soothing colors such as beige (earth) and brown (wood) bring a relaxing atmosphere, which in turn promotes health. Bedrooms should have a “fiery” accent or two to enhance your sex life. Think red, purple, orange and pink accents. Wondering how to decorate a home office? Choose white and gray (metal) to increase concentration, blue (water) to calm. Green accents, on the other hand, are meant to encourage personal growth.

The hallway is the first place you enter. It also sets the tone for the rest of your home. If you’re tripping over socks or shoes, your qi will be compromised right from the start. Invest in a shoe cabinet, coat rack, umbrella stand, and trunks for hats, scarves, and gloves. Also put up one or two plants (with round, not pointy leaves) to bring in good energy.
